Sons Of Veterans Of Union Solidiers Of The Civil WarAre you descended from Sherman or Grant? Did your great-great grandfather play a bugle at Bull Run? Join us for our monthly meetings as we discuss our ancestors' roles in the American Civil War. Peoria is also hosting the state meeting in May. Check back soon for more information. ![]() The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War was created in 1881 by the Grand Army of the Republic, which was itself formed in 1866. Realizing the inevitable demise of the G.A.R., members of the G.A.R. began the SUVCW to carry on their work. After the death of the last Civil War Veteran in 1954, the SUVCW was made the legal heir to, and representative of the G.A.R. by an Act of Congress. The purpose of the SUVCW is to perpetuate the memory of the Grand Army of the Republic and the men who saved the Union 1861 to 1865, and to preserve and make available for research, documents and artifacts pertaining to the G.A.R. Additionally, the SUVCW strives to teach citizenship, patriotism, the history of our country, to honor the Flag and those who served in all wars to uphold it, and to promote and sustain the ideals of representative government, equal rights and impartial justice for all.
